The Church of Sardis write: "...I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and are dead'. (Rev. 3:...1) To me, this would seem like an oxymoron..'the living dead'. It's strange that I would usually associate 'living dead' with a horror movie. However, there are people who call themselves Christians are actually dead or near dead. Many of our churches today are filled with people just like it was back in the days Pual wrote Revelations. The redeeming news is that Jesus is still here...present...the morning star, who holds up the seven churches.
The church at Sardis went through the spiritual motions. It had a name that it was alive: It had a great reputation among the people of Sardis. But God condemns every single religious activity that is not directed by the Holy Spirit. The church at Sardis was living a lie. There wasn't even a reason to persecute it. Who would want to? The world is not going to persecute itself. Sardis was the world under the title church.
While most in the church at Sardis were in a dead spiritual state, "a few people" were faithful to Christ, and had "not soiled their clothes" (3:4). They were promised that they would be taken on a walk in Christ, and to be dressed in white (3:4-5). Are you among the living? Meet God and talk with Him, with your head bowed low...feel His breath upon you!!
And "Be watchful ..." That command was especially for those in Sardis because on two occasions, the city hadn't kept anyone on guard, and it was captured. "... If, therefore, thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee." So, "... hold fast ...and repent"!!
Let him who has ears...hear what the spirit of God has to say...May the Lord breath live into all those who are spiritually dead...or near death...so that they many repent and know the true God of Salvation.
